The Back Allegheny Mountains, which run roughly parallel to the huge Cheat Mountain, are also very large mountains, with a top elevation of 4,843 feet above sea level at Bald Knob. Their average height, however, is only about 3,500 feet.
Cheat Mountain is one of the most distinctive features of Western Virginia. It is an isolated mountain located about 20 miles south of Charlottesville. The mountain is part of the Appalachian Range and reaches a maximum height of 4,038 feet above sea level.
Cheat Mountain was named after Joseph Cheat, who was an American surveyor who traveled through what is now Virginia in 1750. He identified the mountain that bears his name as being the highest point on the East Coast of America.
Today, tourists come to Cheat Mountain to hike its many trails, which range in length from just a few hundred yards to nearly 10 miles. The best known of these trails is the Cheat River Trail, which starts at the end of County Road 1601 near the community of Brawner. This trail follows the banks of the Cheat River for 5 miles before ending at a locked gate near its intersection with County Road 2005. There are plans to build a bridge over the river here that will allow hikers to continue across it into North Carolina.
The Allegheny Mountains, commonly known as the Alleghenies, are a mountain range in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. The Allegheny Mountains run south-southwest for almost 500 miles (800 kilometers) from north-central Pennsylvania to southern Virginia. They are part of the larger system of Appalachian Mountain ranges that extends from New England to Georgia. Geologically, the Alleghenies are made up of flat-topped hills called plateaus, with deep valleys between them. The highest point in the Alleghenies is Mount Mitchell, which at 6,683 feet (2,073 m) is ranked as the highest peak in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Alleghenies were created by glaciers that came down from Canada about 20,000 years ago. As the glaciers moved south, they left behind all their water (which later evaporated) and any dirt they carried along with them (which ended up being thrown into the ocean). This is why the Alleghenies look so much like an ice cap today: There's not a lot of soil here, just rock formations exposed by the ice.
Over time, heat and pressure from below the surface of the earth have transformed some parts of the glacier into coal. Mining this coal is a large industry in West Virginia and Virginia.
Coal has been used as an energy source since before the European invasion of the Americas.
Rising to Mount Davis (3,213 feet [979 m]; the highest point in Pennsylvania) and Spruce Knob (4,863 feet [1,482 m]; the highest point in West Virginia), the mountains consist of nearly parallel northeast-southwest ridges that are drained through the gorges cut by the North Branch of the Potomac and the New rivers. Their peaks are covered with snow most of the year but are mostly bare rock with some grass and shrubs on the lower slopes.
Mount Rogers (6,098 feet [1,881 m]) is the highest mountain in both Virginia and West Virginia. The Great Smoky Mountains (see next question) are also part of West Virginia but are located in Tennessee and North Carolina.
These mountains were formed by volcanic activity about 24 million years ago. The largest volcano, Mount Rogers, built up over time through multiple eruptions until it reached its current height. Smaller volcanoes likely contributed as well. Although they no longer erupt, many of the smaller ones still contain lakes or other forms of water trapped within their hollow centers.

Appalachia is now used to describe the region in America's middle Atlantic states where high mountains dominate the landscape. The word comes from the Iroquois language and means "land of hills."
Mount Mitchell, located in North Carolina, is the range's highest peak at 6,684 feet. In comparison to the Rocky Mountains of western North America, which feature 50 or more peaks rising above 14,000 feet, the Appalachians are relatively low in elevation. The most prominent peak under 14,000 feet is James Buchanan Brady Mountain in West Virginia at 12,804 feet.
The Appalachian Mountains form a barrier between the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean that extends across six states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, and North Carolina. They contain many beautiful lakes and rivers as well as high quality timber. The mountains also provide natural protection for much of southeastern United States from harsh weather conditions such as heavy snowfall, strong winds, and tornadoes.

Each one is separated by wide valleys that were created when previous versions of these mountains collapsed due to erosion caused by rain and snowmelt. These valleys serve as transportation routes for water and wind energy sources such as hurricanes.

The shortest mountain on earth is not really a mountain at all, but rather a volcano that has been partially covered with rock and soil. Mt. Elbert, which is only 6,504 feet high, is located in Colorado in the United States. It is the highest point in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.
Mountain peaks have important effects on their surroundings-especially when they collapse due to erosion or fall into valleys.

Three Defining Characteristics of a "Mountain" By definition, a mountain is an elevated plateau or peak. So, by this standard alone, Chief Mountain is truly magnificent. But there's more to the story than its elevation.
All mountains have three main characteristics: they rise dramatically from the surrounding landscape, they are composed primarily of rock, and they exhibit evidence of erosion. Chief Mountain meets all of these requirements! It is visible for many miles around, it is made up primarily of solid rock, and you can see evidence of erosion where the rocks have been scoured away by water or wind.
In addition to being an important landmark for travelers on the Northern Route across northern Montana, Chief Mountain serves as a popular recreation site. Hikers enjoy the mountain's challenging trails, while climbers ascend its slopes for views and recreation. Visitors also come to photograph the stunning vistas before them, including the beautiful blue of Glacier National Park to the north.
