Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill is a volcanic summit in Auckland, New Zealand, measuring 182 meters (597 feet). It is a significant memorial site for both Maori and non-Maori New Zealanders. One Tree Hill is also the name of the community that surrounds the base of the hill. Around 60,000 years ago, the volcano erupted. The resulting lava flow spread out across much of central Auckland.

During the early 20th century, Maungakiekie was used as a location for pogroms against Asian New Zealanders. The riots began when local politicians used the hill as a site for a war memorial; they excluded Asians from the ceremony because of their role in founding Auckland. The incident sparked off several other attacks that left many Asians dead. Today, Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill is considered a major landmark in Auckland and forms part of its city center.

In November 2005, construction workers building a new office block on McLean Street near Maungakiekie discovered evidence of human remains in one of the foundations. Police later confirmed that they were human bones. This is not the first time that people have gone missing around Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill or else been found dead there. In 1874, eight children between the ages of seven and 14 years old were buried alive under a tree that grew down into the foundation of a house. This tragedy happened after the builder removed the roots to make room for the cellar of the house.

A lava flow is when molten rock spills out of the crater of a volcano and spreads out across flat areas, destroying everything in its path. If Mount Adams were to suddenly blow up, it would be capable of causing widespread devastation due to the size of its lava flows. Volcanic ash is solid material ejected from a volcano's vent during an eruption. This includes dust, pumice, and cinder blocks.
