Most people believe Rudolf von Laban (1879–1958) to be the genuine founder of movement instruction. His theory of movement, with a particular emphasis on the idea of effort, was a significant contribution. However, it was not until much later that he and others began to put his ideas into practice. The first systematic training program based on his work appeared in Germany in 1928.
The true founder of modern movement education is probably Louis LaMode (1873–1959). He created the American School of Dance in New York City in 1908 and published several books on dance technique. His work has been very influential in developing movement awareness in dancers of all kinds of styles throughout the world.
Other important movement educators include Helen Birch Bartlett, Mary Wigman, George Ball, Katherine Dunham, Doris Humphrey, Bella Lewitzky, Violet Oakley, Gene Kelly, and Lindsey Moua.
Movement education has had an enormous impact on both classical and jazz dance. During the 1930s and 1940s, many modern dancers were taught by movement specialists who worked with them on a one-to-one basis to develop their own personal style. Laban believed in the body as an instrument of expression in this work and distinguished between expressive movement and motions that serve a purpose in everyday life (functional movement).
