He got his basic education from the Madras Day School in Chennai and completed his high school studies from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli. In 1949, he went to Delhi to study physics at Punjab University but dropped out after one year to work as an engineer with the Indian Air Force. During his time there, he learned Russian and worked on missile projects. In 1957, he returned to university to complete his PhD on nuclear fission products which was published in 1963.
